The Miklashevsky Estate in Bilenke, Lost Forever

During the Russian invasion of Ukraine, a great deal of Ukraine’s cultural heritage was destroyed, and this architectural landmark was no exception to that tragic fate.

The Miklashevsky Estate in the Bilenke Village

This estate is one of the few in the Zaporizhzhia Oblast that has been preserved in excellent condition. Its history began in 1853. It was built by members of the Miklashevsky family, an ancient noble lineage tracing its origins back to Prince Vladimir of Kievan Rus’.

In 1802, Mikhail Miklashevsky, the civil governor of Novorossiysk, received these lands as his estate. In 1853, construction of the house began based on a design by the German-Estonian architect Ferdinand Hagen.

The mansion was built in the Neo-Renaissance, “brick style,” and Neo-Baroque styles. Inside, it featured elegant wooden decor, spiral staircases, and spacious verandas.

When the estate was completed, it could truly be called a work of art. It was an entire complex that included outbuildings (which have also been preserved) and a landscaped English-style garden with a fountain and a picturesque panorama. The owners intended to live there for a long time and develop the village.

The Fate of the Miklashevsky Estate

Over the course of many years and historical events, the estate has been well preserved. Wars and revolutions did not significantly affect either the house or its interior. It once housed a Zemstvo school, a sewing workshop (which operated until 2005), and an Orthodox church.

More recently, the complex belonged to the Khortytsia National Reserve, which took great pride in it, as it was the best-preserved estate in the Zaporizhzhia region.

The Destruction of the Miklashevsky Estate

On June 22, 2026, the Miklashevsky estate was destroyed by a direct hit from three Russian Shahed-136 strike drones. It appears to have been a targeted attack, especially since the area had been struck before. Now the Miklashevsky estate is lost forever.

Where Is the Miklashevsky Estate Located?

The remains of the landmark can be seen in the village Bilenke in the Zaporizhzhia Oblast, approximately 30 km south of Zaporizhzhia.

However, as of now (July 2026), due to its proximity to combat operations, civilians are advised not to travel there and should refrain from visiting for the time being. Perhaps the estate will be restored in the future. Let’s hope so.
