Monument to a Metallurgist in Dnipro

Back in the postwar era (1950–1960), it was possible to place plaster sculptures all over the city. They weren’t particularly elegant in form, but they seemed quite fitting to both the city’s residents and the artists who created them.

Monument to a Metallurgist on Voskresenskaya Street At 15b Voskresenskaya Street, in a secluded courtyard, you can see remnants of that very era of plaster sculptures. It is a monument to a metallurgist who, surprisingly, is holding a book rather than a tool related to his profession.

People came to call him “The Metallurg with a Book.”

The Monument to the Metallurgist is one of Dnipro’s most unusual monuments. You rarely see monuments like this in the city these days.

The History of the Monument to the Metallurgist with a Book in Dnipro

According to eyewitness accounts, sometime in the early 1950s, a training institute for metallurgical industry workers was located at 15 Lenin Street. Specialists would come here to study. In the courtyard, which was not enclosed at the time, there was a fountain, and one of the visiting workers erected a monument. This took place in 1951 or 1952.

At that time, it was not a monument, but most likely a symbol of those very same metallurgical industry workers.

Starting in 1966, in what was then Dnipropetrovsk, they began tearing down primitive plaster sculptures and replacing them with more aesthetically pleasing ones; the “Metallurgist with a Book” remained.

Where is the monument to the metallurgist with a book in Dnipro?

It can now be found at 15b Voskresenskaya Street. The courtyard is fenced off, and you can only get in when someone leaves and forgets to close the gate behind them. The book is still raised above the sculpture’s head, though its left arm is now partially damaged. Despite this, the Monument to the Metallurgist in Dnipro is still in good condition.
